Ideological Balance Paradox Pt 1
I was listening to The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt and a concept that resonated deeply with me was the idea that differing ideologies are necessary as they bring balance to our world.
I am struggling to put into words how interesting this line of thinking is.
He discussed how we have historically tried to eliminate or minimize views that fundamentally differ from ours yet without differing ideologies, there is no balance.
This validates how important it is for us to reside somewhere in the middle while ironically disagreeing with that line of thinking all the same.
But if we were all somewhere in the middle of the spectrum with our views, then a new spectrum would be present as we fundamentally are unable to have the same views.
If you ask someone to explain what their religion or lack thereof means to them, they are surely to describe it differently than someone of the same views.
Our perspectives give us each unique understanding of the world and that bleeds into our views.
If we were able to eliminate all of the views that differ from ours, leaving just people with views like ours, not only would the world be significantly more extreme, but new factions would arise. Factions that previously would have gone unnoticed due to the presence of much larger disparities in perspective.
