No

You get a message from a peer at work— “Can I bother you for a sec?”

Or maybe it’s:

“I have a suggestion.”

“Do you mind if I have a moment of your time?”

“I have a question for you when you have a moment.”

No context, just those vague messages, destined to force your mind to wander.

These statements and questions kill my soul.

I have a problem where I can’t help but jump straight into my question. I just—can’t help myself.

Why?

Because there is nothing more anxiety inducing than receiving one of the first four messages. Upon receiving them, your mind can’t help but go to the darkest corners of its imagination.

Oh god. What did I mess up? What are they about to throw on my plate? What is the worst possible scenario that could come from this message?

Rarely do these anxieties come to fruition but they are real nonetheless and when you are forced to ask what the person needs instead of getting an immediate follow up message telling you what is going on, you get to stew in the anxiety until they decide to give you closure.

I’m not sure that people do this intentionally. I mean, afterall, who in their right mind would want to make someone sit on the edge of their seat, shaking with the anticipation that their day is about to get blown up by one single message?

Right?
